Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ) is also known by several other names, such as avascular or aseptic necrosis of the mandible/ maxilla, Jaw Death, Dead Jaw disease, or Bisphossy Jaw.  ONJ is a disfiguring and disabling condition where the jaw bones suffer literal bone death through infection and rotting. Z ONJ develops when the jaw fails to heal after minor trauma such as a tooth extraction that results in bone exposure.

On April 18, 2006, the Judicial Panel on Multi-District Litigation issued a transfer order in which it ordered that all Osteonecrosis of the Jaw cases against Novartis relating to Aredia and Zometa be centralized for pre-trial proceedings in the federal court in Nashville, Tennessee. Trials for individual Osteonecrosis of the Jaw cases likely will be conducted in each client's home state, not in Nashville.
